1. At sunrise, Pip settled on a bare rock and reached out with six tiny tentacles. Pip wanted to build a coral city, but one little polyp could not make much of a city.
2. Sunlight warmed Pip, and a tiny alga named Mira woke inside. Mira used the sunlight to make sweet food and shared it with Pip. In return, Pip gave Mira a safe place to live.
3. The food gave Pip energy. Pip used that energy to build a hard limestone cup beneath its soft body. The first piece of the city stood on the rock.
4. Then a current spread sand across the rock. The sand blocked the sunlight, so Mira could not make much food. Pip tucked in its tentacles and waited for a way through.
5. Pip's tiny cilia pushed the sand aside. Sunlight slipped back in, and Mira made food again. Nearby young polyps found clean places to settle.
6. Pip and the other coral animals kept building. Their algae made food in the sunlight, and the builders shared that food with them. Little cups became branches, ledges, and towers.
7. Soon, a striped fish hid in an arch, a shrimp picked crumbs from a ledge, and a sea turtle rested above the reef. The coral city had rooms for many neighbors.
