How Does a Bat Find a Moth in the Dark?

The whole story

1. At dusk, Pip hung beneath an old oak and sniffed the cool air. Supper was somewhere beyond the branches.

2. A small luna moth crossed the moonlit clearing. Pip saw its pale wings and spread its own wings wide.

3. Then a cloud covered the moon. The moth slipped between the trees, where every branch looked like another branch.

4. Pip chased a pale flicker, but it was only a white flower nodding in the grass. Pip tucked its wings close and listened.

5. The night was quiet, but Pip was not guessing anymore. It sent out one high peep and waited.

6. The peep bounced back from a tree. A softer echo returned from the moth hanging in the open air beside it.

7. Pip turned toward the softer echo. There, on a moonlit flower, the moth rested with its wings folded.
