The Mushroom Web Hidden Under the Trees

The whole story

1. At dawn, Mira knelt beneath the beech trees, lifting a damp leaf with a twig. She wanted to find the mushroom web hidden under the forest floor.

2. She checked beneath fern fronds and beside a fallen branch. No mushroom cap appeared, not even a tiny one.

3. Then Mira found a soft, dark log. White threads curled through its crumbly wood, as fine as sewing.

4. She lifted a little soil beside the log. The threads continued below, where the leaf litter became rich, dark earth.

5. The pale threads reached toward the roots of a young beech tree. Mira held the lens over them, but they vanished beneath the roots.

6. She expected a tangle. Instead, the threads formed a quiet web between old leaves, the log, and the tree's roots.

7. Mira sat back on her red boots. The web had a job: it helped turn the log and leaves into tiny pieces the forest could use.
