The Mountain Goat That Walked Where No Path Stayed

A mountain goat uses split hooves, balance, and careful steps to climb steep rock where few animals can follow.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, a young mountain goat named Tavi climbed above the meadow. Tavi carried a tiny green satchel and a very important question: could the goat reach the high spring?

2. The old meadow trail ended at a rockslide. Tavi sniffed the dusty stones. The path was gone, but the spring was still above.

3. Tavi tested the cliff with one hoof. Its two hard toes gripped the stone, while a soft pad helped hold the rest of the hoof steady.

4. Tavi placed each hoof where the rock felt firm. The goat kept its body low and its legs ready, like four quiet hooks.

5. A breeze brushed the cliff, and a pebble slipped away. Tavi stopped with one hoof in the air until the mountain grew quiet again.

6. The next ledge was no wider than a dinner plate. Tavi stepped onto it and found yellow flowers growing in a crack.

7. Then Tavi heard water singing above. The high spring was close, but the last climb rose almost straight up.

8. Tavi did not search for a path. The goat searched for small places to stand. Toe by toe, Tavi climbed where a trail could not stay.

9. At last, Tavi reached the spring. Cold water touched the goat's nose, and the whole mountain seemed to breathe.
