2. But the sea was cold, and the chick was covered in soft down. Its parent tucked it into the warm huddle.
3. The chick watched grown penguins dive, splash, and return with fish. It practiced diving into a drift of snow instead.
4. A parent brought home a fish. The chick gulped it down and asked for another with one very hopeful peep.
5. Then one soft feather came loose. Then another. The chick scratched and shook until the ice looked sprinkled with gray.
6. The wind rose, and feathers flew like a storm. The chick stayed in the middle, where many warm bodies made a shelter.
7. When the wind settled, the chick saw new feathers beneath the fluff. They were small, dark, and shiny.
8. Days passed. The chick’s waterproof feathers spread across its body, and its flippers grew strong.
9. At last, the chick slipped into the water. It bobbed up, blinked twice, and paddled beside its parent.
10. Together, they chased silver fish beneath the ice. The chick was no longer waiting to swim. It was learning to feed for itself.
