The Albatross That Slept Above the Waves

An albatross uses long wings and ocean winds to glide for great distances while spending little energy.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, a young albatross opened its long wings above the sea. It wanted to see what lay beyond the island.

2. The breeze slipped beneath its feathers. The island grew smaller, and the ocean grew wide.

3. The young albatross flapped once, then held its wings still. The wind carried it forward.

4. Near the waves, the young albatross dipped low. Then it rose on air that climbed the wave.

5. Up it went, then down again, tracing a smooth path over the water. It climbed without many flaps.

6. The young albatross crossed wave after wave. Its wings worked with the wind, so its muscles could rest.

7. As evening painted the waves gold, the young albatross let its eyes close. It slept while the wind held it up.

8. By morning, the island was far behind. The young albatross was still gliding, rested and ready for more sea.

9. The ocean wind was not just weather to the albatross. It was a road through the sky.
