1. At seven o’clock on Tuesday morning, Maya steadied her paper-and-clay cell model on the kitchen table. She had built a tiny nucleus, a folded membrane, and several colorful cell parts. Today, she wanted to explain how cells help make a whole body.

2. Then the spoon clinked against the table, and Maya stopped. Her throat felt scratchy, her skin felt hot, and her knees seemed to have forgotten their strength. She lowered herself onto a chair instead of lifting her backpack. The science fair was two hours away, but her body had already asked for a different plan.

3. A clinic test suggested that a virus was causing Maya’s illness. The clinician explained that a virus is not a tiny animal with its own tools for living. It is a tiny package of genetic instructions wrapped in a protein coat, and it cannot make copies by itself.

4. To make more of itself, the virus had to get inside a living cell. Its genetic instructions took over the cell’s own busy machinery, which began assembling viral parts instead of doing only its usual work. One hijacked cell became a workshop filled with copies.
