The whole story

1. At dawn, Maya crouched beside the kitchen window and held her palm above a steaming mug. The warmth touched her skin, while the glass beneath her other hand stayed cool. She wondered why air seemed to choose one direction.

2. She decided to test the question. Maya placed a warm mug beneath one clear glass and a bowl of ice beneath another. Then she balanced a thin tissue ribbon over each glass and waited.

3. The ribbon above the warm mug lifted into a little arch. The ribbon above the ice sagged toward the table. Maya kept her fingers still and watched the invisible air leave clues.

4. Maya frowned at the steam. Perhaps the rising water vapor had tugged the first ribbon upward. She covered both tests with identical clear glasses and tried again, taking away the easiest excuse.

5. Again, the warm-side ribbon rose and the cold-side ribbon sank. Maya pictured the air as a crowd too small to see. When warmed, its particles jostled farther apart and filled more space.

6. She almost said that warm air was weightless. Then she stopped. Warm air still contained matter; it simply spread the same amount of matter through a larger space. That meant each patch of it was less dense.

7. Maya opened the window a crack. The warm air rose, and cooler air slid down to take its place. Around and around, the air traded places, making a quiet loop that her ribbons could reveal.

8. The next morning, Maya watched a chimney plume curl upward and a cool breeze settle near the ground. Warm air expands and becomes less dense than nearby cooler air, so gravity pulls the denser air down and pushes the warmer air up.
