1. On a bright Saturday morning, Mira held a small recorder close to her mouth and began her science club answer. “Why does your voice sound strange in a recording?” she asked.
2. When she played it back, the voice in the recorder sounded thinner and higher than the voice inside her head. Mira stopped the recording and stared at the little blue machine.
3. Mira tried again, speaking slowly and then in her ordinary voice. The recording still sounded unfamiliar, so she decided to investigate instead of chasing a more pleasing version.
4. She placed her fingertips on her throat and spoke once more. Beneath her skin, her vocal cords vibrated and set the air around them trembling.
5. Some of those vibrations traveled through the air into her ears. Others traveled through the bones of her head, reaching her inner ears from the inside.
6. Then Mira understood what the recorder could and could not hear. Its microphone caught the sound waves traveling through the air, but it could not catch the vibrations traveling through her bones.
7. Mira listened again. The recorded voice was still not the one she heard inside her head, but now the difference had an explanation, and that made it easier to hear.
