1. Late one afternoon, Maya knelt in the desert and searched the cracked sand. She found stones, thorns, and one very small seed.

2. Maya turned the seed in her palm. It was hard, brown, and quiet. “How can a flower begin with something so small?”

3. Maya tucked the seed beneath the sand, where the hot wind could not carry it away. Then she waited.
