The Blanket Fort With a Door for Every Dream

Two siblings build a fort to keep dreams organized, then discover the best dream begins when they stop sorting and rest.

The whole story

1. Mara pulled a blanket from the laundry basket. Eli held the other end. “Tonight,” Mara said, “we will build a fort for our dreams.”

2. They made the fort wide enough for two sleepers and tall enough for one grand idea. Eli added three pillows, because grand ideas need soft landings.

3. Soon the fort had a door for flying dreams, a door for ocean dreams, and a door for dreams that made no sense at all. “That one is probably important,” Eli said.

4. Mara sorted every dream she could name. Eli sorted the dreams he could not name. They made a place for dragons, a place for pancakes, and a place for flying backward.

5. But the dreams would not stay in their places. The ocean dream splashed into the pancake dream. A dragon wore the flying dream’s hat. Even the doors seemed to forget what they were for.

6. Mara reached for another pile, but Eli covered it with his pillow. “Maybe dreams do not like being put away,” he said. Mara looked at the open doors.

7. So they stopped sorting. They tucked their feet beneath the blankets and rested their heads on the pillows. The fort became quiet enough to hear their breathing.

8. With no door left to choose, their dreams wandered in together. And the best dream began when Mara and Eli stopped sorting and rested.
