The Pond That Kept the Moon in Pieces

Ripples break the moon into silver pieces, but the pond learns it can be still without holding everything perfectly.

The whole story

1. At dusk, the pond pressed every last ripple flat. It wanted to hold the moon perfectly.

2. The moon climbed higher, round and bright. Then a breeze brushed the pond, and the moon bent into a wobbly oval.

3. A tiny green tree frog landed on a lilypad. Rings spread around its toes, and the moon broke into bright little circles.

4. A maple leaf touched down beside the frog. The pond pulled at every ripple, trying to gather the silver pieces into one.

5. “Please sit softly,” whispered the pond. “I need one perfect moon.”

6. The frog sat softly. The breeze stopped. But one drop fell from a cattail, and a tiny ripple crossed the almost-perfect moon.

7. The pond watched the pieces tremble, flash, and join again. It stopped pulling the water flat.
