At bedtime, Milo closed his notebook and climbed onto his chair. Then he remembered a maybe. Maybe it would rain tomorrow.
The Boy Who Tried to Finish Every MaybeA child cannot sleep because of unfinished maybes, so he places each one on an imaginary shelf for morning.
1. At bedtime, Milo closed his notebook and climbed onto his chair. Then he remembered a maybe. Maybe it would rain tomorrow.
2. Milo wrote down the maybes he could remember. Maybe rain. Maybe a new seat at school. Maybe he had forgotten something important.
3. He packed an umbrella, just in case. That finished the rain maybe. Or maybe the rain would come when he was carrying the umbrella.
4. Milo studied the sky. It did not say yes, and it did not say no. The rain maybe had made a new maybe.
5. He tried to solve the seat maybe, too. He prepared two places for himself. Then he wondered which place his friend might choose.
6. One maybe leaned against another. Then another leaned against that one. Milo's notebook grew heavy with things that were not finished.
7. Milo could not sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, an unfinished maybe tapped on the inside of his head.
8. Milo had an idea. He could not finish every maybe tonight. But he could put every maybe somewhere safe until morning.
9. He placed the rain maybe on the shelf. He placed the seat maybe there, too. One by one, the maybes rested together instead of crowding his head.
10. The maybes could wait for morning. Milo could sleep until then. And in the morning, he would see what was true.
