The Little Island That Feared the Fog

An island feels alone when fog hides the shore, until it hears boats and birds proving the world is still nearby.

The whole story

1. At dawn, Little Island arranged its brightest shells beside the tide pool. It liked to make the shore look welcoming.

2. By breakfast, fog covered the water. It hid the shore, the boats, and every bit of the faraway world.

3. Little Island called, “Hello?” The fog gave back a small, hollow echo. Then everything was quiet again.

4. At noon, Little Island pulled the lighthouse bell rope. Bong! The sound slipped into the fog and disappeared.

5. The fog stayed all afternoon. Little Island sat beside its shell circle and listened to the quiet.

6. Near evening, Little Island heard a low toot beneath the fog. It held very still. A boat was nearby.

7. Another toot answered. Then gulls called from the rocks. Little Island could not see them, but it knew the world was still nearby.

8. At twilight, the fog opened a little. Boats sounded, birds called, and Little Island kept its lighthouse shining. The shore was hidden, but the world was still nearby.
