The Pebble That Remembered the Whole Beach

A pebble misses the daytime waves, then discovers the quiet beach keeps every wave's shape until morning.

The whole story

1. Late in the afternoon, a small pebble watched the waves fold onto the beach. It wanted to remember every one.

2. The next wave brushed the pebble's warm side. The pebble listened carefully, from its foamy hush to its soft goodbye.

3. Then the sun slipped low, and the last wave slid away. The pebble called, “Wait!” but the sea grew quiet.

4. At night, the pebble pressed into the damp sand. It tried to hold on to the waves, but the beach seemed empty.

5. A silver curve appeared beside the pebble. It was not a wave, but it had the wave's shape.

6. There was another curve, and another. The quiet sand held tall waves, little waves, and waves that curled like sleepy cats.

7. The pebble stopped calling. The beach had been listening all along, keeping each wave safe in the sand.

8. By morning, the pebble missed the daytime waves, but it discovered that the quiet beach kept every wave's shape until morning.
