The Lantern That Guarded a Sleeping Garden

A small lantern worries it is the only one awake, then sees roots, seeds, and night insects resting in their own ways.

The whole story

1. At dusk, a small lantern took its place beside the garden gate. It wanted to guard the flowers until morning.

2. The garden grew quiet. The lantern kept its flame bright and watched the paths.

3. The marigolds folded their petals. The bean leaves lowered their heads. The lantern listened, but heard only the soft tick of dew.

4. A breeze brushed the grass, then slipped away. The lantern held its handle close. “Am I the only one awake?”

5. A cloud covered the moon. The lantern's flame flickered, and its light reached under a broad cabbage leaf.

6. Its warm glow slipped into the cracks in the soil. There, roots curled around one another and rested deep below.

7. The seeds tucked themselves into papery coats. Night insects rested under leaves, on stems, and between cool stones.

8. The small lantern had worried it was the only one awake. Then it saw roots, seeds, and night insects resting in their own ways. The garden was quiet together.
