The Starfish Who Waited for the Dark to Sparkle

A starfish feels plain in the daytime tide pool, but at night discovers quiet beauty does not need to hurry.

The whole story

1. At noon, Pip climbed the highest rock in the tide pool. He wanted everyone to notice his bright, beautiful arms.

2. He spread his arms as wide as he could. Sunlight flashed on the pebbles, but Pip still looked plain beside them.

3. Pip made a crown from pink and white shells. For one small moment, he felt ready to shine.

4. Then a gentle wave scattered the shells. Pip sat down in the cool water and watched the bright afternoon pass.

5. The sun slid lower. Pip did not build another crown or climb another rock. He simply waited for the dark.

6. At last, the sky turned deep blue. Tiny lights appeared in the water, and the tide pool began to sparkle softly.

7. Pip looked at the quiet lights. He did not stretch, pose, or try to sparkle. He was already part of the beautiful night.

8. Pip stayed there while the tide pool shimmered around him. The quiet beauty had been waiting all along, and it never needed to hurry.
