The Kite Stuck High Enough to See BedtimeA kite caught in a tree watches windows glow one by one and learns the whole neighborhood has its own good night.
1. Late in the afternoon, Mina carried her kite to the park. She wanted it to fly high enough to see the whole neighborhood before bedtime.
2. The wind filled the kite like a sail. Up it went, above the rooftops and chimneys, with its three yellow bows fluttering behind.
3. Then the wind gave one enormous puff. The kite sailed into the old maple tree and settled between two branches.
4. Mina tugged the string once. She tugged it twice. The kite stayed put, so Mina sat beneath the tree and watched the sky turn lavender.
5. From the branches, the kite could see farther than it had seen all day. One kitchen window glowed, and someone inside began setting the table.
6. More windows glowed. A child opened a book, a cat curled on a cushion, and neighbors carried warm mugs outside. Mina stopped tugging.
7. Caught in a tree high enough to see, the kite watched windows glow one by one and learned that the whole neighborhood had its own good night.
