The Staircase That Counted Backward to Sleep

Each step on the staircase names one thing the day can let go, until the child reaches bed lighter than before.

The whole story

1. At bedtime, Maya put her red crayon away. Her drawing was not finished, and neither was her day.

2. A little staircase had appeared in the hallway. It had eight steps, and it counted backward toward sleep.

3. Eight was for hurry. Maya set down the rushing and took one slow breath.

4. Seven was for mistakes. Maya let one crooked line stay crooked, and her shoulders dropped.

5. Six was for loud words. Maya let the noisy words rest in the jar until they sounded small.

6. Five was for messes. Maya put the spilled-juice worry in a basket and left it there.

7. Four was for losing. Maya let the lost game go, because tomorrow could play a new round.

8. Three was for tomorrow. Maya did not have to carry tomorrow yet, so she left it by the window.

9. Two was for questions. Maya placed the questions in a bowl. They could wait until morning.

10. One was for the day itself. Each step had named one thing the day could let go, until Maya reached bed lighter than before.
