1. Late in the afternoon, Nia tried to draw the river. Tomorrow, she had to read her poem aloud. What if she forgot every word?
2. Nia drew the hill, erased the hill, and drew it again. The busy thought tapped and tapped. She put down her pencil.
3. Nia followed the path to the river. The water slipped past the reeds, but the busy thought came too. It would not stay home.
4. Then Nia saw a red leaf resting in the reeds. It looked ready for a journey. Nia had an idea.
5. Nia set the leaf on the water. She placed her busy thought on it, too. For one quiet breath, she watched.
6. The leaf rested farther down the river. Nia breathed in slowly. She breathed out slowly. The thought did not need an answer right now.
7. Nia still knew about tomorrow. She still had a poem to read. But now she could hold one word, then the next.
8. Nia watched until the leaf became a speck. Her busy thought drifted with it, and her mind felt roomy again.
