Why Does the Moon Seem to Chase Us Home?

The moon looks like it follows us because it is very far away, so our small movements barely change its place in the sky.

The whole story

1. At dusk, Mina walked home along a quiet hill road with her small telescope tucked under one arm. The moon rested above the pine trees.

2. At the first bend, Mina raised her telescope to the moon. It looked close enough to touch, but the hill between them stayed wide and quiet.

3. When Mina crossed the little stone bridge, the moon appeared above the farmhouse ahead. She took three steps, and the moon seemed to take three steps too.

4. Mina hurried to the red gate and stopped with her hand on the latch. The moon hung over the gate, as if it had hurried there first.

5. Mina tried to trick it. She hid behind an old oak tree and counted to ten. When she peeked out, the moon was peeking over the roof.

6. Mina decided to test the moon. She set her telescope beside a fence post and stood on the left side of the post.

7. Then she stood on the right side. The nearby post seemed to jump across the moon, but the moon barely changed its place.

8. At her front door, Mina looked back and gave the moon a little wave. The moon looks like it follows us because it is very far away, so our small movements barely change its place in the sky.
