5. Pip sniffed around the trunk, one small place at a time. The strongest smell was fresh rabbit. A fainter fox smell was older. The tree held layers, not just one smell.
6. Maya touched the bark. “You can tell what came first and what came later?” Pip's bright eyes stayed on the branch. He had found the owl's older scent above the fox's.
7. Maya finally understood. Pip was not smelling one thing. He was sorting many tiny clues by smell, strength, and freshness.
