3. They found the shortest path to the willow, but a leafy bramble arch covered it. Tessa touched her shell and studied the way through.
4. Tessa lowered her head and eased through the bramble arch. Twigs brushed her shell, but her soft legs and belly stayed safely tucked inside.
5. Pip did not need armor. He tucked his legs under him and found another way across.
6. With one strong jump, Pip sailed over the brambles and landed on a soft fern.
7. When the sun grew bright, Pip slipped beneath a lily leaf. His damp, slippery skin shone like a little green pebble.
8. “Your shell protects you,” said Pip. “My jumps, hiding places, and slippery skin protect me.” Tessa nodded. They had taken different paths.
