3. Maya found tiny drops on a leaf. Each drop was a little bit of water, catching the sunlight like a bead.
4. High above, warm air carried water upward. The water gathered into a cloud full of tiny droplets.
5. More water droplets joined the cloud. The cloud became thick, and its underside began to look gray.
6. Maya tested the idea with her jar. One thin layer of water still let plenty of sunlight through.
7. But several layers blocked more light. The sun looked dimmer through them.
8. The cloud grew thicker still. Less sunlight passed through, so more of the cloud looked gray.
9. Plip, plop! Rain began to fall. Maya opened her umbrella and watched the puddles make rings.
10. Now Maya knew the answer. Rain clouds look gray because they are thick with water droplets that block more sunlight from passing through.
11. The rain softened, and sunlight slipped through again. Maya carried her little jar home, full of sky.
