Why Do We Dream Stories We Did Not Plan?

Dreams happen as the sleeping brain sorts memories, feelings, and random signals into scenes that can feel like stories.

The whole story

1. At bedtime, Mina drew a plan for her dream. First, she would sail to a silver island. Then, she would teach a moonfish to sing.

2. She tucked the plan beneath her pillow. “No surprises,” she whispered. Her body grew still, and her breathing slowed.

3. At first, Mina dreamed of a place that was not on her plan. She stood in a school puddle, while a birthday cake bobbed beside her like a boat.

4. The puddle was gone. Mina stood in her grandmother’s kitchen, where the cake smelled like cinnamon and a silver moonfish peeked from the frosting.

5. Mina searched for the silver island, but the kitchen opened onto a rainy street. A school desk sat in a puddle, and a warm scarf hung from a fence.

6. Mina tried to steer the dream toward the island. Instead, she found a friendly bark, a pencil, a rain boot, and a moonfish in a tiny rain hat.

7. Mina stopped searching. She sat on a soft cloud and held the scarf in her lap. The puddle, cake, pencil, and fish all felt familiar.

8. A morning bird called outside. Mina opened her eyes, with the notebook still beneath her pillow. Her dream had ended before the moonfish could sing.

9. Mina drew what she remembered: a puddle, a cake, a rainy walk, and a hug. Her dream had gathered pieces from her day and her feelings.

10. The moonfish was the oddest part. Maybe it came from a shiny spoon, a bird’s call, or a thought that popped up.

11. Dreams happen when the sleeping brain sorts memories, feelings, and random signals into scenes that can feel like stories.
