2. Lila bent her knees, fixed her eyes on the red stripe, and turned. One turn became two, and her ponytails lifted like commas.
3. Then Lila planted both sneakers and stopped. The trees leaned sideways, although the trees had not moved. She grabbed the rail and sat in the grass.
4. Lila blinked at the quiet park. “Why is my body still turning?” she wondered. She put one hand behind her ear, where a tiny balance helper was listening.
5. Deep inside each ear, three curly tubes hold a little fluid. They help the brain notice which way the head is turning.
6. When Lila twirled, the fluid twirled too. When Lila stopped, her head stopped first, but the fluid kept swirling for a short while.
7. Those moving signals made Lila’s balance sense scratch its head. She waited, took a breath, and tried one slow turn with both feet ready to stand still.
