Why Can a Camel Go So Long Without a Drink?

Camels save water with special bodies, lose little moisture, and store fat in their humps that can help make energy and water.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, Nuri filled her red flask at a desert spring. Then she lifted a basket of dates onto her back. Her family waited beyond the dunes.

2. By midmorning, the spring was a blue speck behind her. The sand grew hot, and Nuri kept walking toward the far dunes.

3. A dry wind swept across the ground and rubbed away the trail. Nuri stopped beside a crooked stone and studied the sun. The far dunes all looked alike.

4. The sun climbed higher. Nuri's broad feet spread over the sand, and her long eyelashes kept dust from her eyes. She took one careful step after another.

5. At noon, Nuri found a stone trough, but it held only a few damp grains of sand. She tipped the red flask. A tiny sip was left. Nuri saved it for later and turned toward the date garden.

6. Nuri's body was built for this bright, dry land. Her thick coat shaded her skin, and she did not sweat until she truly needed to. Her nose caught some moisture before it escaped.

7. Her body could let its temperature rise in the heat, so it did not spend water cooling her all day. Nuri lost very little moisture as she crossed the dunes.

8. Near sunset, the date garden appeared. A low fence stood between Nuri and the palms. She set down her basket and nudged the loose gate with her nose.

9. The gate swung open. Nuri set the date basket beneath the palms, where her family could find it, and drank from a full stone bowl.

10. Nuri's hump was not a water tank. It stored fat, and when her body used that fat, it could make energy and some water. Camels save water with special bodies, lose little moisture, and store fat in their humps that can help make energy and water.
