2. Flicker blinked once. Then he blinked again. A meadow can be a very big place for one tiny insect.
3. A small brown tree frog asked, "Why do you blink like a tiny lantern?" Flicker did not know.
4. Flicker tucked his lantern away. He tried to think. Nothing came to mind except a very good piece of moss.
5. Then Glow appeared between the clover flowers. Flicker flashed. Glow flashed back. Their lanterns were having a quiet conversation.
6. Glow flashed a short pattern. Flicker answered with the same pattern. The blinking helped them find each other in the wide, leafy night.
7. But not every blink was a hello. When a hungry animal came near, Flicker and Glow used a different pattern. Their lights warned, "We are not a tasty snack."
8. Flicker wondered how his lantern made light without a flame. Glow lifted one tiny wing, as if the answer might be hiding underneath.
9. Inside each firefly, special chemicals met in a tiny lantern. The meeting made cool light, not hot fire.
10. Now Flicker knew the answer. Fireflies make cool light with chemicals in their bodies, and they flash patterns to find mates or warn other animals.
11. Flicker blinked to Glow, and Glow blinked back. Above the quiet grass, their tiny lanterns said, "We found each other."
