3. Mira decided to investigate. If one yawn could reach another person, perhaps she could catch it in the act.
4. First, Mira sat beside Papa on the soft sofa. They were warm, quiet, and a little sleepy. Papa yawned, but Mira kept her lips pressed together.
5. Then Mira’s nose wrinkled. Her cheeks puffed, and her mouth opened anyway. “Aha!” she whispered. But she still did not know how the yawn had crossed the space between them.
6. Mira tapped her temple with the green pencil. The yawn had not flown through the air like a ball. Maybe her brain had noticed Papa’s face and copied its signal.
7. Mira tried one more test. She sat quietly with Papa, her notebook closed on her knees. The room grew peaceful, and both bodies grew heavy.
8. Mira yawned first. Papa looked at her, and his mouth opened in a matching oval. Mira laughed so hard that Papa laughed too.
