Why Do Some Rocks Sparkle Like Treasure?

Some rocks sparkle because flat crystal surfaces inside them reflect light in bright flashes.

The whole story

1. On a bright spring morning, Mina knelt beside a creek and turned a gray pebble in her fingers. A tiny flash winked from its side.

2. She tucked the pebble into her satchel and searched the gravel. She wanted to find out whether the flash came from treasure.

3. A cloud covered the sun while Mina tipped five rocks toward the pale sky. Even her first pebble stayed dull.

4. She waited beside the creek, holding the pebble still. A sunbeam slipped through the cloud, and one bright flash sprang from the stone.

5. Mina lifted her magnifying glass. Tiny glittering faces hid among the grainy bits of the rock.

6. She tilted the rock a little. The flashes vanished. She tilted it back, and they returned.

7. Now Mina understood that the rock was not shining by itself. Its tiny, flat crystal surfaces were catching the sunlight and bouncing it toward her eyes.

8. Mina held the pebble up once more. Some rocks sparkle because flat crystal surfaces inside them reflect light in bright flashes.
