Why Does the Sky Turn Pink or Orange at Sunset?At sunset, sunlight travels through more air, which scatters away much of the blue light and leaves warmer colors for our eyes.
1. At sunset, Lila stood on the grassy hill and watched the sky turn orange and pink. She opened her notebook. Why did the sky change color?
2. Lila held a clear jar up to the orange glow. The jar stayed empty, and the sky kept changing.
3. A pink patch rested in a puddle beside Lila. She cupped her hands around it, but found only cool air.
4. Then Lila noticed the sun was low, almost touching the hills. Its light had a long way to go before it reached her.
5. At midday, sunlight comes from high above after a shorter trip through the air. At sunset, it slips sideways through a much longer stretch.
6. The air is full of tiny bits too small to see. When sunlight meets them, some of its blue light scatters in many directions.
7. Much of the blue light scatters away before the sunlight reaches Lila. Red, orange, and pink light keep coming toward her.
8. Lila tipped the jar toward the horizon once more. It still held no sunset, but her notebook held the answer in warm-colored strokes.
