When My Best Friend Picked a Different Partner

A child feels left behind when a friend pairs with someone else, then discovers one choice at school does not erase a friendship.

The whole story

1. On Monday morning, Maya carried her paper kite into class. She saved the best seat for her best friend, Zoe.

2. Mrs. Lin announced a partner project. Zoe looked at Maya, then chose Ben. Maya's hand stayed on the empty chair.

3. Maya drew a crooked cloud by herself. Across the room, Zoe and Ben laughed over their bright red sun.

4. At recess, Maya walked past Zoe without stopping. Zoe followed with the paper kite in her hands.

5. Zoe sat beside Maya. "I missed you," she said. Maya picked at a loose thread on her sleeve.

6. "I thought you picked Ben because you liked him better," Maya said. Zoe shook her head. "I wanted to try a new idea with him. I still want you."

7. Zoe handed Maya one corner of the kite. Maya held the other. The knot was tight, but their hands found room.

8. The next day, Maya worked with Zoe and Ben. One school choice had changed, but their friendship had not disappeared.
