I Said Yes When I Meant Maybe

A child agrees too quickly to a plan, then learns to pause, check their own feeling, and change the answer respectfully.

The whole story

1. On Monday morning, Maya hurried through the school gate with a paper invitation in her hand.

2. At lunch, Leo unfolded a map. “Let’s build a secret fort in the woods after school!” he said. “Yes!” Maya answered before she had time to think.

3. Then Maya pictured the woods. She liked exploring, but she also wanted to go home and finish her dragon drawing.

4. Maya sat quietly and checked inside herself. Her yes felt wobbly. It was really a maybe.

5. Maya found Leo by the gate. She took a breath and held up her hand. “Can I pause?” she asked.

6. “I said yes too quickly,” Maya said. “I meant maybe. I want to go home today and draw.”

7. Leo folded the map. “Okay,” he said. “Maybe we can build it tomorrow.” Maya smiled. “Tomorrow, I will check first.”

8. At home, Maya drew a dragon with very large wings. Her answer had changed, and that was okay. This time, she had listened to her maybe.
