The Question I Was Afraid Would Sound Silly

A child hides confusion until they discover other children wondered the same thing and that asking can help the whole group.

The whole story

1. On Monday morning, Maya carried her green notebook into class. Her teacher placed a jar of soil and seeds on the table.

2. The seed had a tiny root. Maya leaned close. Why did the root grow down when the plant would grow up?

3. Maya wrote the question in her notebook. Then she saw many hands go up. She tucked the notebook under her elbow.

4. At home, Maya opened her notebook. She imagined everyone laughing at her question. The pencil stayed still.

5. The next day, the class examined the roots again. Maya held her notebook tightly while the teacher asked, “What are you wondering?”

6. Maya lifted her hand. Her voice came out small. “Why does the root grow down?”

7. For a moment, the room was quiet. Then three hands rose. “I wondered that too,” said Ben. “Me too,” said Asha. “And I did not know how to ask,” said Rowan.

8. The teacher thanked Maya. Together, the class made a new plan. They would turn one jar sideways and watch what happened.

9. The jars rested on their sides. The roots still curled toward the soil, while the shoots reached for the light. Maya filled three notebook pages.

10. The class learned that roots search down for water and support. Maya added one more sentence: “A question can help everyone grow.”
