The Day My Calm Plan Actually Worked

A child uses a breathing plan during a hard moment and discovers that calm is not magic, but a skill that grows with use.

The whole story

1. On Monday morning, I packed my backpack and checked my calm plan. Breathe in. Breathe out. Try again.

2. At school, my group began a block bridge. I placed one block on top, then another.

3. Then the bridge tipped over. Blocks clattered everywhere, and my hands squeezed into fists.

4. My face grew hot. I wanted to shove the blocks away. My teacher pointed to my calm plan.

5. I breathed in slowly. I breathed out longer. The first breath did not fix everything.

6. So I tried again. In, out. In, out. My fingers loosened, and I could hear my group.

7. We made a wider base. This time, the blocks stayed up.

8. On the way home, I held my pebble in my pocket. Calm was not magic. It was a skill, and every breath helped it grow.
