2. Maya had practiced every line. She had even practiced the quiet part at the end.
3. When her name was called, Maya carried her poem to the front. The room grew still.
4. The first lines came out clear. Maya's voice filled the room like a little bell.
5. Then her sneaker caught the rug. Her folder tipped, her pages flew, and Maya landed on her knees.
6. For one enormous second, everyone saw Maya on the floor. Her face grew hot, and the poem hid against her chest.
7. Maya wanted to disappear under the rug. Her teacher knelt beside her and said, “Take one breath first.”
8. Maya breathed in slowly. She breathed out slowly. “I am embarrassed,” she whispered, and the words made the feeling less giant.
9. Maya picked up her pages. They were wrinkled, but her poem was still there.
10. She began again. Her voice shook on the first line, then found its bell.
11. When Maya finished, the class clapped. Then everyone went back to painting planets, and the room carried on.
12. By the time Maya reached the courtyard, nobody was staring. The mistake had felt enormous, but it had already become one small part of her day.
