The Kind Thing I Did Not Know How to Say

A child wants to comfort someone sad and learns that sitting nearby, naming care, and offering help can be enough.

The whole story

1. Mara set her paper boat on the puddle and watched it sail past the red leaf.

2. Then Mara saw Jun beneath the maple tree. Jun held a purple lunchbox and stared at the ground.

3. Mara wanted to ask what was wrong. The words curled up inside her and would not come out.

4. She thought of saying, “Cheer up.” That sounded too small. She thought of saying, “Do not be sad.” That sounded impossible.

5. So Mara sat down nearby. She did not ask for an answer. She let the quiet sit with them.

6. After a while, Mara said, “I care about you, Jun. I am here.”

7. Jun rubbed one eye. “I forgot my lunch,” Jun whispered. “And I was too embarrassed to tell anyone.”

8. Mara opened her backpack. “I can share my sandwich,” she said. “And we can tell Ms. Lee together.”

9. Jun took half the sandwich. They sat together until the bell rang, and then they walked inside side by side.

10. Mara never found a perfect thing to say. She found a place to sit, a way to name her care, and a hand to offer. Sometimes, that was enough.
