The Hard Thing I Practiced in Secret

A child hides a difficult skill from others, then learns that practice is not something to be ashamed of and progress can be shared.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, Mina stepped onto the low beam behind the shed. She lifted her arms and tried to balance.

2. Her foot wobbled. Mina hopped down and wrote one word in her notebook: Again.

3. Mina practiced before breakfast, after lunch, and whenever the yard was quiet. She did not tell anyone.

4. When her mother came outside, Mina tucked the notebook under her sweater. Her secret felt heavy.

5. One afternoon, Mina stayed up for three whole breaths. Then she stepped down with a quiet smile.

6. Her mother had seen. Mina looked at the grass. “I am not good at it yet,” she whispered.

7. Her mother smiled. “That is what practice is for. You never have to hide the part that is growing.”

8. The next morning, Mina practiced where her mother could see. Her foot wobbled, but she stayed.

9. Mina stayed for five breaths. Then six. Her mother clapped, and Mina laughed.

10. Mina opened her notebook and showed every wobbly try. The hard thing was still hard, but now her growing was not a secret.
