The whole story

1. On Monday morning, Maya stared at her math page. The problems seemed to march ahead without her.

2. Maya looked at Eli's answers. His page was full, while hers had empty spaces.

3. Maya copied one answer. Then she copied another. Her pencil felt heavy in her hand.

4. At home, Maya tucked the page under a book. She wanted the copying to disappear, but it stayed in her thoughts.

5. The next morning, Maya took a slow breath. “I copied the answers,” she said. “I was worried that I was behind.”

6. Ms. Rivera thanked Maya for telling the truth. Then she asked, “Which part feels puzzling?”

7. Maya showed the first step she did not understand. Together, they built the problem with blocks.

8. Maya tried again. This time, the answer belonged to her.

9. For a few days, Maya practiced a little at a time. She made mistakes, circled them, and tried once more.

10. On Friday, a new problem made Maya pause. She raised her hand and asked for help.
