The Friend Who Said No to My Favorite Game

A child learns that no is not unkind, and finds a new plan by listening to what both friends want.

The whole story

1. On Saturday afternoon, Maya bounced her soft orange ball beside the playground racetrack. “Race and tag?” she asked. “My favorite game!”

2. Leo shook his head. “No, thank you. I do not want to play tag today.” Maya’s ball stopped bouncing.

3. Maya looked at Leo. “Did I do something wrong?” Leo shook his head again. “No. Tag feels too loud today. I would rather build a town.”

4. Maya wanted to say, “But tag is best!” Instead, she watched Leo line up the blocks. “What kind of town?” she asked.

5. “A town with a bridge,” said Leo. Maya added a bridge. Then she had an idea. “Could the town have a race?”

6. Leo thought. “Yes, if the race is quiet and nobody chases anyone.” Maya nodded. “We can roll the ball through the town.”

7. Maya rolled the ball slowly. Leo guarded the bridge. The ball slipped under it and knocked over one tiny house.

8. Maya reached for the block. “Sorry, town.” Leo smiled. “That is why we need a town repair team.”

9. They made three rules: roll gently, repair together, and stop when someone says no. Then they played until the sun turned peach.

10. Maya understood. No was not unkind. It helped her listen, and listening helped two friends find a game they both wanted.
