The Small Lie That Grew Shoes

A child tells a small lie to avoid trouble, then learns that truth can walk them back to trust faster than hiding can.

The whole story

1. On Saturday morning, Mara hurried to the community garden. Her job was to water the bean plants and leave the ripe tomatoes for everyone.

2. One tomato was round, red, and ready. Mara picked it before she remembered the rule. She tucked it behind her back.

3. Aunt Lina came to check the harvest. “Where is the red tomato?” she asked. Mara swallowed. “A bird took it,” she said.

4. Mara walked away with the tomato in her pocket. Then the pocket felt heavy. It grew two red shoes.

5. The shoes pointed toward the tomato plants. Mara pulled at them, but they would not hide. Her little lie had grown larger than her pocket.

6. Mara sat on the bench and looked at the tomato. “Aunt Lina, I told a lie,” she said. “I picked it, and I was afraid you would be cross.”

7. Aunt Lina took a slow breath. “Thank you for telling me,” she said. Mara placed the tomato in the basket and watered the plants she had missed.

8. The shoes became small again. Mara still had work to do, but she no longer had to hide. Truth walked her back to trust faster than hiding ever could.
