The Friend Who Needed a Different Kind of Sorry

A quick apology does not fix everything, so a child learns to listen, give time, and change the action that caused the hurt.

The whole story

1. On Tuesday morning, Maya built a bridge across a puddle. She wanted to show it to her friend Rowan.

2. Rowan came over with his blue kite. Maya reached up to show him the bridge.

3. Maya waved too quickly. Her hand knocked Rowan’s kite into the stones, and its blue paper tore.

4. “Sorry!” Maya said at once. “It was an accident.”

5. Maya pointed to the bridge. “Come on. We can build another kite later.”

6. Rowan did not move. He smoothed the torn paper with his finger. Maya’s smile slipped away.

7. Maya sat nearby. She did not fill the quiet with more words.

8. After a while, Rowan said, “I wanted to fly it today. You waved before I was ready.” Maya listened.

9. Maya looked at the torn kite. “You needed me to wait,” she said. “I’m sorry I didn’t.”

10. Maya opened her backpack. “Would you like help fixing it, or would you rather do it yourself?”

11. “Help, please,” Rowan said. Maya held the glue. Rowan placed the patch.

12. When the patch was firm, Maya waited. Rowan lifted the kite and nodded.

13. Maya kept her hands still while Rowan got ready. This time, she waited for his nod.

14. The kite was not perfect, but it was ready. Maya’s sorry had taken time, listening, and a change in what she did.
