The Goodbye That Needed a Plan

A child anxious about separating from a caregiver creates a clear goodbye routine and learns that leaving and returning can both be trusted.

The whole story

1. On Monday morning, Mira held her backpack strap at the classroom door. Her grown-up waited beside her. Mira wanted to stay, but goodbye felt too big.

2. Mira tried one goodbye. Then she tried another. Each one became longer, wobblier, and harder to finish.

3. That afternoon, Mira had an idea. “Goodbyes need a plan,” she said. Her grown-up put down the milk and listened.

4. Mira chose four steps. First, one hug. Next, two waves. Then, a silly secret handshake. Last, her grown-up would say, “I will come back after story time.”

5. On Tuesday, Mira showed the plan to her grown-up and her teacher. She took one hug and held it tight.

6. Mira gave two waves. One wave was high. The other was low, near her knee.

7. The secret handshake had a tap, a clap, and one tiny wiggle. Even the teacher learned the wiggle.

8. Last came the promise. “I will come back after story time,” said her grown-up. Mira held the words like a small, steady stone.

9. Mira built a tower with the blue blocks. It leaned left, leaned right, and stayed up. Then the teacher began story time.

10. Mira listened to the story. When it ended, footsteps came down the hall. Her grown-up had kept the promise.

11. Mira ran to the waiting arms. The leaving had happened. The returning had happened too.

12. The next morning, Mira still wanted a hug. She still watched the door. But now she knew the plan: goodbye, hello, and trust in between.
