The Mess That Looked Too Big to Start

The whole story

1. On Saturday morning, Maya opened her bedroom door. The mess filled the room from rug to window.

2. Maya picked up one sock. Then she saw the books, the blocks, and the laundry. She put the sock down.

3. The room looked too big to start. Maya sat down among the things and took one slow breath.

4. Maya did not choose the whole room. She chose one corner by the door.

5. Maya made three piles. Toys went in the basket. Books went together. Clothes made a soft heap.

6. A sock did not belong with a puzzle piece. Maya paused, sorted them, and kept going.

7. The corner grew clear. Then the path grew clear. Maya could see the floor beneath her feet.

8. The room was not perfect yet. But it was smaller than it had been, one corner at a time.

9. At last, only one block remained. Maya put it away and laughed. The big job had become a little job, step by step.
