The Promise I Forgot by Snack Time

When a forgotten promise disappoints a friend, a child learns to make reminders and repair trust with a new, kept promise.

The whole story

1. On Saturday morning, Maya tied a blue ribbon around a little birdhouse. “I promise to help you paint it after lunch,” she told her friend Leo.

2. Leo placed blue and yellow paint on the table. Maya wrote the promise in her red notebook, then closed it with a snap.

3. After lunch, Maya saw a red ball under the apple tree. She chased it, bounced it, and chased it again.

4. Then Maya built a stone tower. One stone leaned left, so she fixed it. By the time it stood straight, the afternoon was nearly gone.

5. Leo waited by the birdhouse. He waited until the paintbrush in his hand grew dry.

6. At snack time, Maya remembered. She hurried to the garden, but Leo had already packed up. “You forgot,” he said.

7. Maya did not blame the ball or the stones. She looked at her notebook and said, “I made you wait. I am sorry.”

8. Maya made a reminder for the refrigerator. She set an alarm for tomorrow and put the birdhouse by the door.

9. The next morning, the reminder rang. Maya arrived before Leo and held up the birdhouse. “This time, I kept my promise.”

10. Leo smiled and handed Maya the last yellow brushstroke. The birdhouse shone in the sun, and their new promise hung safely by the door.
