When Helping Started to Feel Like Bossing

A child who takes over a friend's task learns to ask first, listen to the answer, and help in the way the friend actually wants.

The whole story

1. On Monday morning, Maya hurried to the art table. Leo was making a kite for the spring fair.

2. “That corner needs blue,” Maya said. “And the tail should be longer.” Leo kept painting.

3. Maya grabbed the string. “I’ll tie it for you.” Leo’s hands dropped into his lap.

4. Maya fixed the tail, smoothed the wings, and chose the brightest ribbon. Leo said, “I was going to do that.”

5. “Here. Glue these pieces now,” Maya said. Leo looked at the pieces, then at Maya.

6. Leo took a slow breath. “Maya, I don’t want you to do all of it.” Maya stopped with the ribbon in her hand.

7. Maya put everything down. “What would you like me to do?” she asked. Leo pointed to the tail.

8. “Please hold the kite while I tie the ribbon,” Leo said. Maya held it still. Leo tied the knot himself.

9. Maya asked, “Would you like the small brush or the big one?” Leo chose the small brush.

10. Maya asked before she pressed on the star. Leo nodded. They worked side by side.

11. At the field, Leo held the kite and Maya held the string. Before helping, Maya asked, “How can I help?”

12. Leo answered, “Please tell me when the wind feels strong.” Maya listened. She did not grab the string.

13. A stronger breeze brushed Maya’s cheek. She raised her hand. “Now,” she said.

14. The kite rose high, with Leo’s colors and Maya’s help. Helping felt better when they both had a say.
