1. On Monday morning, Maya wrote a joke in her green notebook. She could hardly wait to share it.
2. Her classmate Leo had made a very tall paper tower. It leaned to one side, just like a sleepy giraffe.
3. Maya pointed and said, “Leo’s tower is so wobbly, it needs a pillow!” A few children laughed.
4. The laughter landed on Leo. He folded his arms and stopped building.
5. Maya opened her notebook, but no new joke came. She noticed Leo sitting very still.
6. Maya knelt beside him. “Leo, I am sorry,” she said. “My joke made you feel small.”
7. She did not make another joke. She asked, “Would you like help fixing your tower?” Leo nodded.
8. Together, they made the tower strong. Maya gave Leo a card that said she was sorry.
9. Then Maya told the class, “A joke is not kind if someone feels small. I should have stopped when I saw Leo’s face.”
10. Leo smiled when Maya asked what would make the tower better. This time, their laughter made room for both of them.
