The Backpack That Carried Tomorrow's Worry

A child worries about a coming day and learns to pack what can be packed, ask what can be asked, and leave the rest for morning.

The whole story

1. Mira stood beside her bed at sunset and packed for tomorrow. Tomorrow was the class trip to the river museum.

2. She packed a water bottle, a snack, and a raincoat. Then she packed an extra pair of socks, just in case.

3. Mira added a compass, two notebooks, three scarves, and her toy rabbit. The backpack gave a small, crowded sigh.

4. But questions kept popping into her head. What if she got lost? What if the rain came? What if she forgot what to do?

5. She tried to lift the backpack. It was heavy with things, and heavier with worry.

6. Mira carried her questions to Aunt Jo. “What should I do if I get lost?” she asked.

7. Aunt Jo said, “Ask a teacher, stay with your group, and keep this contact card in your pocket.” Mira placed the card there.

8. Together, they packed what could be packed. The extra scarves stayed home. So did the compass and the toy rabbit.

9. Mira laid out her clothes and put the backpack by the door. She had prepared what she could.

10. Aunt Jo answered the questions that could be answered. The others waited quietly for morning.

11. Mira took one slow breath in and one slow breath out. Tomorrow could wait until tomorrow.

12. In the morning, Mira picked up her backpack. She had packed what she could, asked what she needed, and left the rest for morning.
