The Lunch I Did Not Want to Try

A child nervous about unfamiliar food learns to use polite words, try a tiny taste if ready, and respect their own body.

The whole story

1. Maya opened her lunch bag at school. Inside was a little dish of green and orange vegetables she had never seen before.

2. Maya leaned away from the dish. “I do not want to try that,” she said. Leo looked at it, then at her.

3. “You do not have to eat it,” Leo said. “You can say, ‘No, thank you,’ without making a face.”

4. Maya took a breath. “No, thank you,” she said. The words felt better than a wrinkled nose.

5. Leo said, “You could try one tiny taste, if you want. You can stop whenever you want.” Maya looked at the tiny piece.

6. Maya decided she was ready for one tiny taste. She touched it to her tongue and waited.

7. The taste was surprising. Maya took a sip of water and listened to her body. It said, “That is enough for now.”

8. “No, thank you,” Maya said again. “I tried a tiny taste, and I am finished.” Leo nodded. “That is a good way to know.”

9. Maya ate the lunch she wanted. She had used polite words, tried when she was ready, and listened when her body said stop.
