2. She pushed the button hard. It slipped away. She tried again, faster.
3. The button slipped again. Then the next one slipped too. Maya tugged the cardigan until it looked like a little red tent.
4. Maya grabbed her bag. Her lunch box rolled under the bed. Her button popped onto the rug. Even Biscuit looked puzzled.
5. Maya stopped. Her hands were tight, and her cheeks were hot. She took one slow breath.
6. She lined up the edges. She held the button still. Then she pushed it through, gently.
7. The button went through. So did the next one, and the next. Soon, Maya was ready, with time to spare.
8. Maya stepped outside with Biscuit beside her. The morning had not grown longer. She had simply stopped making it harder.
9. Maya smiled at the last blue button. Sometimes the quickest way through a morning was to slow down.
